Autocar has been offering its famous test drive for almost a century. Its “Five-Star Car” award is reserved for vehicles that display outstanding performance in all categories. This year, only three models – including the IONIQ 5 N – won the ultimate accolade, demonstrating just how stringent the criteria for the road test are.

The IONIQ 5 N is the first Hyundai model to win Autocar’s “Five-Star Car” award. The magazine’s team of test drivers particularly praised the vehicle for its cutting-edge technology, dynamic capabilities and engaging driving experience – qualities rarely seen in today’s high-performance EVs. In its official report, Autocar described the IONIQ 5 N as a ‘game changer’ in that it offers ‘an extremely fun-to-drive experience while being capable of handling any situation dynamically.’

Powered by a twin electric motor powertrain with a combined output of 650 bhp (with N Grin Boost mode activated), the IONIQ 5 N is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. Even beyond this pure speed performance, Autocar praised its N e-Shift function, which simulates the gear changes and engine braking properties specific to combustion engine vehicles – helping to increase driver engagement through more immersive sensations.

Vehicles that have truly changed the game have always been a rare commodity, and this is even more the case in the current crisis in the automotive industry. Yet that’s precisely what the IONIQ 5 N is: a game-changer. The arrival of the N label marked the birth of the electric vehicle designed for driving pleasure, and this Autocar “Five-Star Car” award is richly deserved.

The IONIQ 5 N is the first 100% electric vehicle to be developed by Hyundai’s N division and is designed to engage drivers in the age of electrification. Based on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform, the vehicle benefits from an advanced regenerative braking system, a thermal management module calibrated for circuit driving and control software dedicated to high-performance vehicles, all derived from racing. Combined with a spacious interior, two-way charging (V2L) and advanced connectivity, the IONIQ 5 N redefines the very nature of a high-performance EV.

From the outset, the IONIQ 5 N has demonstrated Hyundai’s technological leadership, directly changing the perception of the brand through its exceptional performance, razor-sharp handling and genuine emotional engagement with the driver. It has demonstrated this once again by winning Autocar’s “Five-Star Car” award – recognising its success in one of the most demanding and renowned road tests in the automotive sector.
