The Greek airline AEGEAN announces its strategic decision to invest in a version of the A321neo with a long range and an improved cabin in order to create a complementary “specific use” fleet  initially comprising  4 A321neo  aircraft Longer reach to better serve markets beyond the EU, particularly in the south and south-east of Greece.

These 4 new A321neo will be equipped with additional fuel tanks which will allow them to carry out flights of a maximum duration of 7.5 hours. The cabin configuration of these aircraft will be different providing a higher level of comfort for both economy and business class passengers. The number of seats will drop from 220 in the standard version of AEGEAN’s A321neo, below 180 seats in this new configuration. Other features will be part of this passenger comfort perspective with an in-flight entertainment system (IFE) connected by satellite for each seat and a new 180° reclining seat in business class.

AEGEAN plans to use these aircraft to serve destinations outside the European Union, whether existing in the company’s network or new ones, with flight times of between 4 and 7.5 hours. As an indication, these destinations include Gulf cities already served by the company such as Riyadh, Jeddah or Dubai, and may also concern potential new destinations such as Bahrain, Doha and Oman in this region, or even Lagos, Addis Ababa and Nairobi in Central Africa or Delhi and Mumbai in India or Almaty in Kazakhstan.

Due to the extended flight duration and market particularities, these destinations are usually served from or to European capitals by carriers using aircraft offering greater comfort and lower seat density compared to the usual intra-cabin configuration. -European companies from AEGEAN. The company aims, thanks to this investment and the quality of its crews, to serve and develop these markets from/to Greece with an improved product. These new modernized aircraft will be delivered in 2026 and 2027.

Dimitris Gerogiannis, CEO of AEGEAN, said:  “  We are convinced that developing markets beyond the EU, whether in the Gulf region, Africa or Asia, represent a great opportunity for AEGEAN and for our country, and that they could be served by a special, longer range version of the A321neo, given our location in the extreme south-east of Europe. We further recognize the need for a cabin with superior comfort and experience features to represent AEGEAN’s values to our passengers in these markets. We are investing significantly in extending the range and in a whole new level of comfort for this first complementary fleet of four aircraft in order to give our crews the right tool to best represent AEGEAN’s values on these services where flights are longer. This is another big step towards expanding our reach and capabilities and we look forward to welcoming our passengers on these flights to this new experience for years to come.  »

Dimitris Gerogiannis, CEO of AEGEAN

As a reminder, at the end of 2023, AEGEAN placed 3 additional options on Airbus A321neo aircraft as part of its purchase contract with Airbus and also converted 5 firm orders for A320neo into A321neo. With these options and conversions, the total number of A320/321neo family aircraft already received or on order has reached 50, of which 29 are now A321neo. Among these 29 neos, 25 will retain the current standard configuration, while 4 will be modified to integrate the new “specific” configuration.
